What these systems require
Filtration and circulation sized for clarity rather than biological load. Treatment to control algae, particularly on outdoor features with sun exposure. Scale control where water chemistry threatens architectural surfaces.
Interactive and splash features add a public-health dimension. Where the public comes into contact with the water, disinfection and monitoring requirements may apply based on the governing code and local health authority, in addition to the architectural design requirements.
Equipment usually has to be hidden. Vaults, remote mechanical rooms, and concealed enclosures are the norm, and they constrain equipment size and access severely.
Where projects go wrong
Access is designed last. Equipment in a below-grade vault still needs servicing. Filters need media changes, pumps need seals, probes need calibration. Vaults sized to fit the equipment and not the maintenance become a permanent operating problem.
Interactive features are treated as decorative. The moment the public can touch the water, health code applies. Equipment specified for a decorative feature can be non-compliant for an interactive one, and the distinction is sometimes made late in design.
Evaporation and makeup water concentrate minerals. Outdoor features lose water constantly to evaporation, concentrating hardness and driving scale on the visible surfaces the feature exists to display. Water chemistry management is part of the equipment scope.
Winterization can be overlooked in cold climates. Drain-down provisions, freeze protection, and equipment suited to seasonal shutdown all need to be designed into the system.
