What these systems require
Circulation and filtration at a scale where equipment selection carries real capital and operating consequences. At these volumes, a modest change in turnover rate moves the equipment budget substantially.
Wave generation creates continuous displacement and surge that the treatment system has to absorb without losing suction or flooding balance tanks.
Water clarity is a performance requirement: surfers need appropriate visibility, and operators need the lagoon to present well. That makes clarity a filtration and treatment objective, not simply a chemistry target.
Large surface area outdoors means significant evaporation, thermal load, and debris. Makeup water volume is a real operating cost.
Where projects go wrong
The lagoon is treated as a very large swimming pool. Code-derived pool turnover applied at surf park scale produces equipment costs that can undermine the project. These systems need designing against actual water quality requirements and loading, not scaled-up pool convention.
Surge is underestimated. Wave generation displaces continuously. Balance and surge capacity have to handle that motion, not just bather displacement.
Debris load is treated as an afterthought. Outdoor lagoons collect wind-blown organic material year-round. Pre-filtration and skimming need designing in, or filters carry a load they were not sized for.
Operating cost is not modeled at design. At this scale, pumping energy, makeup water, and chemical consumption are significant annual figures. Equipment selected on capital cost alone can be expensive to run for twenty years.
