Hydroponics & Aquaponics

Hydroponic systems deliver nutrient solution to plant roots, while aquaponic systems couple fish production with plant growth and use nutrients generated by the aquatic side of the system. Both depend heavily on water quality, circulation, filtration, oxygenation, temperature control, and monitoring.

SIVAT Water Solutions supplies circulation, filtration, UV sterilization and water treatment equipment for hydroponic and aquaponic growing systems, including greenhouse and vertical farm installations.

What these systems require

Circulation must deliver solution consistently across the growing area. Filtration removes solids that can foul emitters and root zones. Temperature control helps maintain the conditions required for plant health, while oxygenation helps prevent low dissolved-oxygen conditions in the root zone.

Aquaponics adds the full requirement set of a recirculating aquaculture system on the fish side, coupled to the plant side. The two halves have different optimal water chemistry, and the system has to serve both.

Pathogen control matters commercially. A root disease moving through a recirculating system can take out a full crop cycle.

Where projects go wrong

Dissolved oxygen in the root zone is overlooked. Plants need oxygen at the roots. Systems designed around nutrient delivery without adequate oxygenation produce poor performance that gets blamed on nutrients.

Pathogen control is added after the first crop failure. UV or filtration on the recirculating solution is far cheaper as original equipment than as a retrofit following a loss.

Aquaponic systems are designed as two separate systems. The fish side and plant side have different requirements, and the coupling between them is the hard part. Equipment selected for each half independently often does not work as a whole.

Water chemistry drift is not monitored. Recirculating nutrient solution changes composition continuously as plants take up some elements faster than others. Without monitoring, the drift is invisible until the crop shows it.

How SIVAT helps

We review circulation, filtration, oxygenation, and temperature control against the growing method and crop, and confirm that pathogen control is in the base scope rather than a future addition.
