FRP Fabrications

FRP fabrications are custom fiberglass reinforced plastic vessels, tanks, sumps, platforms and components built for an aquatic system where standard equipment will not fit; the laminate schedule is the specification.

Where it’s used

Custom filter vessels. Non-standard sumps and surge tanks. Degassing towers. Quarantine and holding systems. Retrofits into existing mechanical rooms where standard vessels will not fit. Any application where geometry is dictated by the building rather than the catalog.

Why specification matters

The laminate schedule is a critical part of the specification. Wall thickness, reinforcement layers, and resin system determine strength, chemical resistance, and service life. Two vessels of identical dimensions can differ substantially in construction and performance, so dimensions alone are not a complete specification.

Resin selection follows the chemistry. General purpose, isophthalic, and vinyl ester resins have different resistance profiles. Ozone exposure, elevated temperature, and seawater each push the requirement up. Specifying the wrong resin produces a vessel that performs for two years instead of twenty.

Interior surface matters for animals. Gelcoat quality, surface finish, and color affect cleanability, animal behavior, and observation. Vessels holding animals need finishes confirmed safe for aquatic life.

Nozzle and penetration locations are fixed at fabrication. Every connection has to be located before the vessel is built. Coordinating with the piping layout early prevents field modifications that compromise the laminate.

Lead times are longer than catalog equipment. Custom fabrication takes time. On a compressed schedule, FRP is often the item that determines when the system can be commissioned, which makes it a procurement priority, not a late buyout item.
