Aquaculture & Fisheries

Aquaculture systems are production systems. Water quality is not merely an aesthetic concern; it directly affects growth, feed conversion, animal health, survival, and operating economics. When the system underperforms, the impact can appear quickly in production results.

Recirculating aquaculture facility with circular rearing tanks, concrete raceways and filtration skids

SIVAT Water Solutions supplies equipment for recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), hatcheries, fisheries centers and research facilities: mechanical and biological filtration, degassing, oxygenation and aeration, UV, pumps, tanks and water quality monitoring.

What these systems require

Recirculating aquaculture systems reuse water continuously, so solids and metabolic waste must be managed continuously. Drum and microscreen filtration are common approaches for heavy solids loading, while biological filtration must be sized around ammonia production and feed input rather than tank volume alone.

Dissolved oxygen can be a limiting factor on carrying capacity. Carbon dioxide can also accumulate and affect growth and water chemistry before it becomes acutely dangerous, making degassing an important, and sometimes overlooked, part of high-density recirculating systems.

Hatcheries and research facilities run different requirements again: pathogen control on incoming water, precise temperature control for developmental staging, and the ability to isolate systems from each other completely.

Where projects go wrong

Biological filtration is sized on volume instead of feed rate. Feed input drives ammonia production. A biofilter sized against tank volume can be badly undersized on a heavily fed system, and the problem only appears once stocking density comes up.

CO₂ removal is omitted. Aeration and degassing are treated as one function. They are not. Systems with adequate oxygen and no degassing hit a growth ceiling nobody can explain.

Backup power stops at the pumps. Oxygen supply, monitoring, and alarming need to survive an outage too. A recirculating system without water movement has a short window before losses begin.

Water source is not characterized before equipment is specified. Incoming water chemistry (including hardness, alkalinity, iron, dissolved gases, and potential pathogens) can determine pretreatment requirements. Specifying the recirculation loop before characterizing the source can leave the treatment system unable to maintain the intended water quality.

How SIVAT helps

We review RAS and hatchery equipment against feed loading, target density, species requirements, source-water conditions, and operating strategy rather than volume alone. We check that aeration, degassing, monitoring, alarming, spare probes, and critical consumables are addressed in the initial equipment package.

Common questions

What equipment does a recirculating aquaculture system need?

Circulation pumps, mechanical solids removal, biological filtration, degassing, oxygenation, disinfection and temperature control, tied together by instrumentation and controls. The equipment list is similar to an exhibit system, but the loading and the tolerance for failure are different.

How is biological filtration sized in a RAS?

On the ammonia the system produces, which follows from feed load rather than water volume. A tank sized correctly for fish and incorrectly for feed will not hold water quality.

Why does degassing matter in aquaculture?

Carbon dioxide accumulates in systems with low exchange rates and suppresses growth well before it is visible in the animals. Degassing is one of the most commonly missing pieces of equipment on a recirculating system that underperforms.
