Blowers & Aeration
Blowers supply air to aquatic systems. That air does several different jobs, and the requirements for each are not the same.

Blowers in an aquatic life support system supply low-pressure air for aeration, degassing, filter air scour and foam fractionators, and are specified on delivered pressure at the point of use rather than on volume alone.
What air does in a life support system
Aeration adds dissolved oxygen through diffusers. Degassing strips carbon dioxide and nitrogen, critical in recirculating aquaculture where CO₂ accumulates and suppresses growth. Air scour assists filter backwash by agitating media. Airlift moves water without a pump in some designs. Fractionator supply feeds the contact column.
Where it’s used
Recirculating aquaculture, where aeration and degassing are continuous and central. Aquarium and zoo systems. Hatcheries. Ponds and lagoons. Any system with sand filters using air-assisted backwash.
Why specification matters
Flow and pressure both matter, and pressure is easy to underestimate. A blower is selected for a required air volume at a defined discharge pressure. Diffuser submergence and line losses add back pressure, so a blower sized on CFM alone may not deliver the required air where it is needed.
Regenerative and positive displacement suit different duties. Regenerative blowers are quieter and simpler at lower pressures. PD blowers handle higher pressure and deeper submergence. Specifying the wrong type produces equipment that runs continuously at the edge of its range.
Air is hot. Compression raises air temperature significantly. In systems where that air contacts water directly, it becomes a thermal load. It also affects diffuser material selection and blower room ventilation.
Diffusers foul and are consumable. Membrane diffusers have finite life and need replacement access. On systems where diffusers sit in a deep tank, that access needs designing in, retrieving them should not require draining the vessel.
Blower rooms need ventilation and acoustic treatment. Blowers generate heat and noise. Both are frequently underestimated at design and become problems at commissioning.
How SIVAT helps
We size blowers against actual delivered air requirements including submergence and line loss, confirm the blower type suits the duty, and check that diffusers are accessible. We price blowers, diffusers, piping, and the silencers and filters that go with them.

Where this equipment is used
- Aquaculture & FisheriesRecirculating systems, hatcheries and research facilities, where water quality limits production.
- Zoos & AquariumsExhibit life support, quarantine and holding, across marine and freshwater habitats.
- Lakes, Ponds & LagoonsAeration, circulation and water quality for large water bodies that are managed rather than filtered.
